Lost my cool and other shit

Ok not really.
But I finally got my copy of the Hex dispensers My love is a bat 7" back. I travelled last year to montreal and ended up buying a hex dispensers 7 " while I was there. How weird is that.
Anyway on the way back, I had no real way to carry it so I let my friend RadioActive carry it with her records. Well she and I never could remember to ask/bring it when we met up. Finally got it and listened to it. Bad Ass is all I can say, If you can find it buy it. Its on Alien Snatch Records, and was limited to 500.
Side A is the highlight " My love is a bat" but side B is no slouch. Cloak and Dagger Complication. The Art is fantastic, like all Hex dispensers stuff.

Space is the New Japan

After this years SXSW, I have the distinct impression that Space is this years Japan. A few years ago it was all about the Scandinavians, then it was japan, and this year I say its space. I was lucky enough to see the She Creatures who hail from Venus by way of the UK. The bass Player Also played a theremin. Most times she was playing it while she took a break on the bass but on occasion she played both instruments at the same time.

I did make it out to see at least one Austin band. The always excellent Hex Dispensers.

Overall I hit some good free Beer and BBQ and saw some good bands. I plan on hitting up a new podcast this week.

SXSW

As usual there is a lack of Austin punk band promotion during the SXSW Music Festival. There was a good bill at Beerland Last night. Super Secret/Mortville Records. I did not make it. :( It was not an official SXSW showcase from what I can tell. Anyway, hitting some free day shows today and tomorrow.
I am going to try and catch the hex dispensers at the Longbranch Inn tomorrow. I'll also be playing at MYXYY ( 96 Lyyn St. ) @ 7 PM on Friday with a band called the Saltworth Sundries. New podcast next week.

He is currently facing some medical issues and TXRD is joining together to support our dear friend. We hope to lessen the stress and have a good time for him and with him. Houston is an amazing person to know and we need to raise money to ensure his medical issues get resolved and he enjoys many many more years with us . Please come out and show your support for the man that runs a huge part of the Red River music scene, builds a mean rollerderby track and has always been there for us.

Rock-A-Round Entertainment is pleased to present its first annual Wild Weekend Power Pop Festival and Record Swap, Friday, August 29th and Saturday, August 30th, at Emo’s in Austin, TX. It’s a weekend filled with exciting reunions mixed with some of today’s most electrifying touring acts.

Among the headliners of this 30-band weekend will be first wave UK punk artists The Boys (“First Time,” “I Don’t Care”), appearing for their first U.S. show in over 25 years, and Paul Collins' Beat (“Rock N Roll Girl,” “Walking Out On Love”), who defined the skinny-tie power pop sound of the '80s.

Other notable bands on this festival include Vancouver’s Pointed Sticks (“What Do You Want Me To Do,” “Apologies”), whose recent reissue of their epic “Perfect Youth” album spawned sold out shows in Japan and Canada. 20/20 (“Yellow Pills,” “Cheri”) are back together to bring the quintessential power pop sound to the masses, alongside fellow Bomp Records alumni Nikki Corvette (“You’re The One,” “He’s A Mover”).

They will all be joined on several stages by two dozen “Now Wave” power pop bands, many of which are inspired by these reuniting headliners.

The majority of the shows will be at Emo’s, but several day parties and other events are scheduled at other Austin locations. A record swap is scheduled as well.

Super Secret Record releases and other band updates

I'm going to try and keep up better with whats going on with the bands tha ti have on the show. I was really interested in just playing stuff that I liked, but I think its a disservice to the bands If I don't also try and promote the new things that they are doing. so to that end.

Throughout its short history, punk has existed as the scab that just won't heal, constantly picking itself and exposing a new layer. Whereas the genre sprung from societal and political disenchantment, a punk band trying to express genuine disgust in 2008 has to pick a little harder. Local quartet the Ape-Shits has crystallized its bleak world-view in the manic, disheveled energy of its debut on Austin imprint Super Secret Records, La Pollution Culturelle. Celebrating its release Friday, the Ape-Shits picked with gusto, their shows always one lobbed beer can away from total chaos. A shambolic "I Come Alive" and "I Want No One" whipped the soused Friday night crowd into a frenzy, but it was LP highlight "(I See) White People," spit by guitarist Shawn Carpetbagger with a great sing-along chorus, that could become an Austin classic: "They've got blond hair. They've got blue eyes. They watch reruns of Friends and drive north on 35." As the 45-minute set progressed and more libations were consumed, there was an impromptu rendition of "Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be Will Be)" and a couple of G.G. Allin covers. Maybe the stars were aligned just right that night, because a fight broke out near the front of the stage, which resulted in guitarist Dean Beadles and a handful of others escorting a man out of Beerland and the end of the show. The Ape-Shits ripped the scab so fast we didn't feel a thing.

Faceless Werewolves

Pardon Me, Are Those Your Claws On My Back? CD Release Date March 11, 2008! Although the national release is as mentioned above you can get a copy a few days in advance. The album will be available at an intimate but still full volume performance at Waterloo Records in Austin, TX Friday March 07, 2008 (5 PM FREE!). The Werewolves are also having a CD release party the following Saturday night at Beerland to be followed by a SXSW performance the following week. TEXAS ROLLERGIRLS SEASON OPENER

I am designing the Silk Screen Poster for this event. In preperation for that I had to use the concept for the Digital version as well. of course the final silk screen will not have all of the type treatment that this has, and will be more pure. This years posters are all going to be based on Comic Book Covers. I obviously used the EC/Tales from the Crypt/ Horror comics for this one.

2008 Season Opener - March Madness

After a long, dark winter, a new season has finally arrived to the heart of Texas—a season that heralds the sounds of young skaters pounding the crap out of each other and the fresh scent of skate pads ripening on the track. That season, of course, is roller derby season, the loveliest season of them all!

Derby turns over its new leaf on Sunday, March 2nd, as those divas in purple and silver, the Hustlers, face off against the rough-and-ready Honky Tonk Heartbreakers. Both of these teams made out like bandits during the off-season draft pick, adding some of the most talented skaters in the country to their rosters. The teams are well matched in skill and desire, and this bout is sure to signal the "ones to watch" for 2008.

The second bout the evening is a rematch of the smokin' 2007 championship match-up, showcasing the scrappiest schoolgirls on 4 wheels, the Hell Marys, versus the formidable Hotrod Honeys. After a tough loss back in August, the "always-a-bridesmaid, never-a-bride" Honeys are looking to go all the way to the championship altar this season. Come out to Playland, Sunday, March 2nd and see it all unfold!

We rollergirls are badasses on the track, but when a sister takes a tumble -- on her skates or in her life -- we lend a helping hand. Our spotlight charity on March 2 is the YWCA of Greater Austin. Incorporated in 1907, the YWCA of Greater Austin is committed to providing women and girls with opportunities for life-long learning through workshops, groups, classes, community service and fund-raising events.

new hotrod honeys logo

SO I was asked to come up with and idea for a new hotrod honeys logo. Here was my submission. Looks like they responded to it.
I will be taking it into illustrator and vectorizing it. They wanted somethign that could appeal to both men and women. This is the low res version.

Texas Rollergirls Whammy Review Video

Texas Rollergirls had their awards ceremony on Sunday. Its called the Whammy awards. To that end Dagger Deb and I worked on the end of the year video montage. The video came for the years worth of bout footage taken by Michael Colins. The song we chose was a mash up of Missy Elliot and Kill Bill called Kill Missy. It was fitting since it was an Asian themed event. I also put together the presentation of the awards and nominees. Dagger helped me work on the Retiree song and images as well it was a great event.

Rice Rocket Vans

I finally got to Rice rockets first custom shoes.

I figured between her being Rice Rocket and her playing for the Hotrod honeys, that I needed to combined Nasa with Pink and black flames. The checkerd Vans put it over the top. Race car flags and what not. on the back is her number 3e8 or the speed of light.

Doodle and Canoodle

We started an art group, that meets every week and displays the latest artwork that they have done. We typically have an "assignment", but its pretty loose and it is really designed to force a bunch of us in to creating something each week. Last night i practiced with a new band. this one is a bluegrass influenced countryfied maybe glam maybe not band called the pickin scabs. We worked out a couple of originals and discussed the option of doing some covers. More to come on that.

Texas shootout final logo submission

Well I think this is whats going to end up as the final logo for the Texas Shootout. The WFTDA National Tournament for 2007. So I wanted to post it up here.
There were several concepts that we toyed with but this one seemed to have the greatest general appeal.

I was asked to help out on the Texas Shootout design. The Texas Shootout is the 2007 WFTDA National Rollerderby Tournament. I made several comps and we started to solidify the direction the league wanted to go. I'll be posting those in the next couple of days.
I have really been enjoying this project and look forward to the poster contest that they are having.

WFTDA Launches National Poster Design Competition for 2007 National Championships- Texas Shootout

Calling all graphic artists! The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) has launched a national poster design competition for its 2007 National Championships, dubbed Texas Shootout, which will be hosted by the Texas Rollergirls in Austin, Texas September 29th and 30th.

According to Jennifer Wilson, WFTDA Board of Directors member and retired Texas Rollergirl skater, “Austin is the birthplace of the women's flat track roller derby revolution, so it's only appropriate that the top ranked flat track derby leagues in the nation converge on Austin to see who's the best of the best."

The top eight teams from across the country will duke it out for the title of WFTDA champions. The WFTDA currently has 39 member leagues that represent almost every state in the US. This year’s WFTDA championship bout highlights the top four teams from both the Eastern and Western Divisions. Representing the best of the West are all-star teams from Rat City Rollergirls of Seattle, Tucson Rollerderby, Texas Rollergirls, and Kansas City Roller Warriors. The top four teams from the Eastern Division will be decided at the Eastern Regional Tournament held in Columbus, Ohio this August.

The deadline for submissions is July 1, 2007 and a winner will be announced July 15, 2007. Please send your artwork to Texas Rollergirls- WFTDA Tournament Committee, ATTN: Bloody Mary, 8760A Research Blvd. #511, Austin, TX 78758, or via email to wftdachampionships@txrollergirls.com.

Final poster size is 11"x17" plus bleed. 4 color, one sided. Please submit a high quality PDF with crop marks and 1/8" bleed. PDF files are encourage, but we can also accept 300 dpi TIFF or Adobe Illustrator EPS with fonts outlined.

Hear that?! It's clappin' hands and stompin' feet 'cause we've got another night of over-the-top Flat Track Derby action and live music for ya!

On the track... your hometown Hustlers (in slippery-as-satin purple & silver) take on Dallas' Assassination City. The Dallas girls warn spectators to watch their heads, but they'd better watch their a**es 'cause the Hustlers are on a mission to put them 6-feet under.

In the second bout of the night, the undefeated (and unstoppable?) Hotrod Honeys face the also-undefeated (and divinely blessed?) Hell Marys. Can the fast living, fast driving Hotrods prevail over the power of the plaid?

DJ Net Wt. will spin the soundtrack all night for all the on-track action, and at half-time, it's a feel-good, shake-down, dance party with Austin's own Clap! Clap! The groovin' good time continues at the after-party at our favorite clubhouse: Beerland.

Punk Rock Podcast

A little over a year ago i started an Austin Punkrock Podcast to highlight bands that I liked. I did a couple 3 episodes and then lost interest, got laz=y whatever. Well its time that I brought it back and so here in all of its glory is episode 4. I am definitely reinterested in continuing this podcast thing so look for more episodes soon. The latest work is a swipe of the Rock and Roll Over cover. Changing the men to women and making them fit each of the Texas Rollergirl teams. Then I took some photos from Celesta Danger and kissafied them.

Much of my art is influenced by music. I prefer to have something playing while I work.

Here is a poster I did for the Texas Rollergirls. Its probably the most recent work.

I drew up the "tank girlesque Dorothy on a piece of bristol then did all of the color layer in Photoshop.
the final size of the piece was 9 x 20"
Silkscreening was done by foundry in Austin Texas.

So for as long as I could remember I loved to draw. Occasionally I made a few bucks here and there, and decided that maybe I should start a blog and post art and the like. As far as the name of this blog it comes from a Hellacopters song.
The line is "I may not look like jagger, may not have money in the bank, I got a pair of cheap sunglasses and my castles may be made out of sand, but hey I'm in the band" So I guess what I am saying is that I may not be Warhol, but an artist none the less.
